STRESSORS IN THE AIDS HOSPICE ENVIRONMENT

A questionnaire concerning job stress was given to the 68 employees of Casey House Hospice, Toronto, Ontario. Multiple patient deaths per month was listed as a source of stress for 78.3% of the survey respondents. Other sources of stress included young age of hospice residents (70.2%), residents' sexual orientation (64.6%) and AIDS treatment approach (63.6%). Staff relations and facility administration were identified as other significant sources of stress. The authors conclude that a significant portion of the stresses commonly encountered by workers in AIDS hospice facilities are preventable, and that a large percentage are due to problems with facility staff and administration.
