BRUCELLOSIS AMONG HOSPITAL EMPLOYEES IN SAUDI ARABIA

The incidence of brucellosis among hospital employees in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was investigated. The hospital staff was largely from North America, Europe and the Far East. Nine hospital employees developed brucellosis. Seven were bacteriology technologists, two were nurses, and one was an obstetrician. All responded to therapy. Two of the hospital employees had frequent contact with brucellosis patients. Brucella species was the most common pathogen found among patients who had blood cultures in this hospital. The authors conclude that in areas where brucellosis is endemic, hospital workers, particularly bacteriology technologists, are at increased risk of getting this infection.
