WORKPLACE ASSAULTS ON MINORITY HEALTH AND MENTAL HEALTH CARE WORKERS IN LOS ANGELES

A study was conducted on workplace violence directed toward minorities. The incidence of assaults on minority health care workers in Los Angeles County between 1986 and 1990 was determined from workers' compensation claims and classified as to age, sex, race, job classification, and type of facility. A total of 628 verified assaults were identified over this time period on 530 minority health care workers. The highest annual assault rate was seen for the job classification of custodial administration while the highest rate among patient care employees was seen for inpatient nursing attendants. The vast majority of assaults were committed by patients.
