A questionnaire was distributed to a randomly selected population of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) physicians. The survey was used to obtain information on policies and procedures for managing violent patients, equipment available for protection and patient restraint, types of assistance available, and estimates of injuries. Ambulance calls to a North Carolina metropolitan county EMS, made between June and December 1991, were analyzed. A total of 4,200 EMS calls were made during the study period; 33 calls (0.8%) involved violent patients. The author concludes that the potential for injury to prehospital providers from violent patients appears to be widespread. All EMS systems should have protocols for managing violent patients.
