RISK OF THYROID NODULES IN SUBJECTS OCCUPATIONALLY EXPOSED TO RADIATION: A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY

Fifty men with occupational radiation exposure were compared to 100 controls in a cross sectional study on the risk of thyroid nodules associated with occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. A significantly greater incidence for thyroid nodules was seen in the exposed subjects, who worked in orthopedics, hemodynamics, interventional radiology, or radiotherapy. The authors suggest that occupational exposure to radiation may be a risk factor in the development of thyroid nodules.
