INFECTIOUS RISKS FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS

Current issues in infectious disease exposure risks to health care workers were examined in this review. Discussions were presented on risks of health care workers to the most commonly encountered infections including hepatitis-A, hepatitis-B, hepatitis-C, human immunodeficiency virus, influenza, measles, meningococcal disease, mumps, rubella, scabies, tuberculosis, and varicella. Problems in identification of infected individuals and with prophylactic treatment of known exposures were discussed. A table summarizing recommendations for preventing the transmission of tuberculosis in health care settings was presented.
