A study was conducted on the risk of physical assaults among 1,000 nursing students at a nursing college in Scotland. There were 372 reported assaults during the 15 month study. The rate of physical assaults was higher among student nurses than other grades of nursing staff inthe psychiatric hospital. Gender differences were observed with regard to physical assaults on nursing staff. In the acute division, there were more attacks against women than men, whereas in the long stay division more of the attacks were against men than women. The authors conclude that violence is a major hazard to nursing staff, and that the risk is greater for student nurses and untrained staff and is highest in the psychiatric environment.
