TUBERCULOSIS OUTBREAK AMONG HEALTHCARE WORKERS IN A COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

An nosocomial outbreak of pulmonary tuberculosis among health care workers (HCWs) exposed to an infected patient was reported. A total of 29 HCWs at a medical center in California were exposed to an active case of unrecognized drug susceptible tuberculosis during patient treatment in the emergency room and medical intensive care unit. Of the exposed workers assessed for tuberculosis infection following exposure, ten previously negative workers converted to purified protein derivative positive status within 3 months of the exposure and an additional three workers developed the disease. Concerns regarding difficulties associated with the control of disease transmission in health care settings were discussed.
