REPORTS OF WORK RELATED MUSCULOSKELETAL INJURY AMONG HOME CARE SERVICE WORKERS COMPARED WITH NURSERY SCHOOL WORKERS AND THE GENERAL POPULATION OF EMPLOYED WOMEN IN SWEDEN

Work related musculoskeletal injuries among Swedish homecare service (HCS) workers were examined and compared with incidence rates for similar injuries in female nursery school (NS) workers and all female workers. The prevalence of overexertion and musculoskeletal injuries in HCS workers was significantly higher compared to NS workers, as well as the percentage of all work related injuries. The incidence of musculoskeletal injuries increased with increasing age in all workers, but were significantly greater in HCS and NS workers than in the general female working population. Patient lifting was the most frequently cited cause of injury in HCS workers. The authors conclude that HCS workers sustain a higher level of musculoskeletal injuries than NS workers, due to their having to perform physically stressful tasks more frequently than NS workers.
