A study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter-pylori in gastroenterologists and gastroenterology nurses compared with that in other medical practitioners and the general population. The seroprevalence of H-pylori in gastroenterologists was significantly higher than in internists, gastroenterology nurses, general nurses, or in controls. No significant difference in prevalence of H-pylori was seen between gastroenterology or general nurses and controls. The prevalence of H-pylori infection increased significantly with years of practice and age in gastroenterologists, and increased only with years of practice among gastroenterology nurses. The authors conclude that transmission from patients to medical personnel during endoscopic procedures accounts for the increased prevalence of H-pylori in gastroenterology specialists and nurses.
