ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK RELATED TO OCCUPATIONAL HANDLING OF CEFOTIAM DIHYDROCHLORIDE

A case of acquired occupational sensitivity to cefotiam-dihydrochloride (CTM) was reported in a nurse. She presented with recurrent urticaria of the hands related to handling CTM. She also reported occasional systemic symptoms, including anaphylaxis, when preparing CTM. Erythema and urticaria developed within 10 minutes using an open patch test with 30mg/ml CTM while similar tests to penicillin and a panel of other cefem antibodies were negative. The authors recommend that medical workers use caution in handling antibiotics, especially atopic workers and those with hand dermatitis.
