A study was conducted on the exposure of sawmill workers to chlorophenols following elimination of the use of chlorophenol containing antistain agents. Urine samples obtained from workers from three sawmills in Finland which had ceased use of chlorophenol containing agents between 6 and 10 years earlier were analyzed for the presence of chlorophenols. Traces of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol, and pentachlorophenol were identified in samples from both previously occupationally exposed workers and nonexposed referents. The concentration of chlorophenols identified in the previously exposed workers were of the same order of magnitude as those seen in nonexposed referents and members of the general population. The authors conclude that sawmill workers do not appear to be at risk for chlorophenol exposure at mills at which chlorophenol containing agents had been used.
