ORTHOPEDIC INJURIES EXPERIENCED BY U.S. PRISONERS OF WAR DURING OPERATION DESERT STORM: A DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS

A study was conducted characterizing orthopedic injuries suffered by the 21 US prisoners of war during Operation Desert Storm. Orthopedic injuries were present in 48% of the prisoners. The majority of the injuries were a result of ejecting from aircraft and 31% resulted from aircraft mishaps. Thirteen percent of the orthopedic injuries occurred during captivity. Injuries to the neck and spine, shoulders, and upper extremities accounted for 76% of the reported orthopedic injuries. Soft tissue injuries were recognized in all prisoners of war and 19% developed handcuff neuropathy. Eighteen of the 21 prisoners remained on active duty at the time of this report and one was not physically qualified for active duty as a result of injuries suffered in a helicopter crash.
