EXERCISE-INDUCED AIRWAY NARROWING IN ARMY RECRUITS WITH A HISTORY OF CHILDHOOD ASTHMA

A study of exercise induced airway narrowing in asymptomatic army recruits with a history of childhood asthma was conducted to determine whether breathing cold dry air during maximum heart rate exercise could induce airway narrowing in persons with a history of childhood asthma who were asymptomatic. The study group consisted of 100 British Army recruits, 93 males, who had a history of childhood asthma but had been symptom free and off all treatment for at least 4 years. They underwent exercise challenge on a treadmill while breathing room air (23.3 degrees-C) and cold air (-5 to -10 degrees). Significant airway narrowing was found in 29 subjects; 12 after breathing both cold and room air, ten after breathing cold air, and seven after breathing room air.
