MRI OF THE BRAIN IN CHRONIC CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

A total of 13 patients who experienced carbon-monoxide (CO) poisoning following a 1963 coal mine explosion were examined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Lesions, cerebral white matter degeneration, and atrophy were noted in 12 patients. The brain stem and cerebellum were normal in all cases. The authors conclude that the history of CO inhalation and a knowledge of the distribution of lesions as noted here could be used to recognize the chronic stage of CO poisoning.
