A PROSPECTIVE STUDY EVALUATING EARLY REHABILITATION IN PREVENTING BACK PAIN CHRONICITY IN MINE WORKERS

An early rehabilitation program was used to prevent chronic back pain in coal miners in Queensland, Australia. The program consisted of training the workers in the anatomy, pathology, and causes of low back pain, providing acute back care by first aid officers and early referral to a general practitioner, and encouraging an early return to work. The program was evaluated by comparing the average time to return to work after an acute back injury, the number of compensation claims for low back pain, and the costs of the claims between 1980 and 1986. The authors conclude that the program was successful in preventing chronic back pain among miners.
