HIGH FREQUENCY OF METALWORKERS AMONG PATIENTS WITH SEMINOMATOUS TUMORS OF THE TESTIS: A CASE-CONTROL STUDY

Questionnaires were used to assess occupational exposure in 174 patients with malignant testicular tumors and 193 controls. Metal workers were found to have a statistically two fold higher risk for seminomas and mixed seminomatous tumors. The risk for embryonal carcinomas for metal workers was less than half that for controls. The authors conclude that the multiple exposures of metal workers preclude the detection of a single causative substance, and that reducing indoor industrial pollution and cigarette smoking would result in lower incidence of testicular tumors in metal workers.
