Variations in acetic aldehyde, formaldehyde, ammonia, bacteria, yeast, and fungi levels in two cutting fluids were studied over a 1-year period and correlated with worker complaints of mucous membrane and skin irritation. Symptoms were slightly associated with aldehyde concentration, fluid pH, and ammonia concentration. The authors state that the measured chemical and microbiological parameters were not sufficient to predict the occurrence of symptoms in exposed workers.
