LEAD POISONING IN AN OIL-PIPELINE MAINTENANCE WORKER

The case history of a 20 year old male Taiwanese worker who developed abdominal fullness, diffuse abdominal pain, and postprandial vomiting was presented. The individual had been a maintenance worker at a petroleum company for 9 months where he used an acetylene torch to cut and connect oil pipelines, which were coated with a lead-based paint. Clinical studies resulted in diagnosis of lead poisoning. The authors conclude that surveillance of lead poisoning in maintenance workers who burn or cut metal structures coated with lead containing paints should be encouraged.
