An ergonomically based participatory approach for reducing mental and physical workloads among office workers was described. The approach involved establishing a steering committee of management personnel and workers to decide on a framework agreeable to all participants, performing appropriate monitoring of the worksite to identify problems that are recognizable and accepted by all participants, developing a panopoly of solutions for the problems, allowing the workers to select a solution, implementing the solution, and evaluating its effectiveness. This approach was applied to workers employed in the Department of Salary Records in one of the ministries of the Dutch Federal Government. After changes were implemented, 50 to 67% of the workers reported beneficial effects
