OCCUPATIONAL ASTHMA DUE TO CEFTAZIDIME

A 22 year old woman developed rhinitis and episodic wheezing 1 year after starting work in a pharmaceutical firm. She was occasionally exposed to ceftazidime powder during maintenance and repair operations. During workplace challenge tests, no unusual occupational exposures occurred and no obvious asthmatic symptoms were observed. In a series of laboratory challenges with ceftazidime, she was exposed to increasing daily doses of ceftazidime ranging from 0.32 microgram to 3.2 milligrams. All challenges with 10 micrograms or more ceftazidime induced rhinitis. Chest tightness and wheezing accompanied by late decreases in 1 second forced expiratory flow occurred following challenge with 3.2 milligrams ceftazidime.
