PHYSICAL EXERCISE
COLORECTAL CANCER

A CASE-CONTROL STUDY OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN RELATION TO RISK OF CANCER OF THE RIGHT COLON AND RECTUM IN MEN

This study examined the relation between occupational and vigorous leisure time physical activity and the risk of cancer of the right colon and rectum. In all, 163 men diagnosed with right colon cancer and 242 men diagnosed with rectal cancer were interviewed. Interviews were also conducted with 703 men without cancer for comparison. The main finding was that the amount of time spent at vigorous leisure time physical activities was associated with a decreased risk of cancer of the right colon. Occupational activity was not strongly related to the risk of right colon cancer, although the results for self reported occupational activity were consistent with a slightly lower risk among the active men. The risk of rectal cancer was not found to be associated with physical activity.
