MORTALITY OF INHABITANTS IN AN AREA POLLUTED BY CADMIUM: 15 YEAR FOLLOW UP

A 15 year follow up study was conducted of 2,408 persons from a 1974 examination in an effort to determine the long term prognosis of cadmium induced renal tubular dysfunction with urinary retinol binding protein (RBP) as an index. Comparison of the RBP positive group with the RBP negative group showed increases in the standardized mortality ratios for cardiovascular diseases, particularly heart failure, and renal diseases in both sexes. The authors conclude that the prognosis of cadmium exposed persons with renal tubular dysfunction was unfavorable.
