ENVIRONMENTAL-POLLUTION
MERCURY-EXPOSURE

EXPOSURE ANALYSIS OF THE INHABITANTS LIVING IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF A MERCURY-CONTAMINATED INDUSTRIAL SITE

An exposure assessment was conducted for the residents of an area near an abandoned mercury factory in south Germany. Samples taken include 497 soil samples, 372 plant samples, and 45 indoor air samples. Children aged 1 to 4 years had the greatest exposure; ingestion of soil or dust was the major route of exposure. For children aged 4 to 10, inhalation of indoor air was the predominate route of exposure, with children aged 7 to 10 the most exposed. The authors conclude that age groups within the study population are exposed through different routes, with small children particularly at risk.
