An epidemiological study was initiated in January of 1990 in response to increased reports of illness in residents of an area around an industrial waste landfill in Montchanin, France. The site operated from 1979 until mid 1988, when it was closed. The only significant exposure to pollutants released from the site was considered to be via the air route. The findings suggested that after the landfill was closed, the residents most exposed to the residual volatile organic compound emissions remained at higher risk to present subacute or chronic irritative pulmonary diseases or psychological disorders that result in the need for medical care. The risk seemed to increase with the level of exposure. This suggests that while the site is currently inactive, the landfill emissions have played a role as a debilitating factor in the past. The authors recommended that thorough remedial action be taken by the local authorities.
