HYPERSENSITIVITY PNEUMONITIS (EXTRINSIC ALLERGIC ALVEOLITIS) INDUCED BY ISOCYANATES

Clinical, immunologic and bronchoscopic examination were conducted on 14 patients suspected of having isocyanate induced hypersensitivity pneumonitis. The patients were recruited from a group of 1,780 isocyanate workers. Chest X-ray examinations and lung function testing were also conducted. The patients reported repeated episodes of dyspnea, fever, and malaise after latency periods of several hours following isocyanate exposure. The results indicated that isocyanate induced typical hypersensitivity pneumonitis. The author concludes that symptoms such as fever, malaise, and dyspnea occurring several hours after working in at risk environments such as foam production, injection molding, and paint spraying sites should initiate specific screening and surveillance programs so that definite diagnoses of exposed workers can be obtained and appropriate preventive measure be introduced.
