Recent information on exposure to indoor air microbes and related health effects, as well as the health effects of mycotoxins, were summarized. Factors involved in the exposure to indoor microbes such as fungi and actinomycetes were temperature, humidity, and buildings with moisture and microbiological problems. The health effects of such exposures included irritative and nonspecific respiratory and eye symptoms, respiratory infections, allergic reactions, alveolitis and organic dust syndrome, and chronic bronchitis. Skin irritation, mucosal necrosis and/or inflammation, immunotoxicity, and respiratory or intestinal disturbances have been associated with exposure to mycotoxins such as trichothecenes. The immunological and allergic responses to microbial or mycotoxin exposure were briefly reviewed.
