BENZENE EXPOSURE ASSESSMENT IN RUBBER HYDROCHLORIDE WORKERS: A CRITICAL EVALUATION OF PREVIOUS ESTIMATES

The risks of benzene exposure in rubber hydrochloride workers were evaluated. The effects of work practices, engineering controls, dermal absorption, representativeness of benzene samples, detector tube accuracy, and other factors on previous exposure estimates were discussed. The authors conclude that previously reported NIOSH benzene exposure estimates for rubber hydrochloride workers are most consistent with the available information about conditions that prevail in the manufacturing process.
