A survey of methods used to control hazardous exposures in the Dutch rubber manufacturing industry was conducted as a followup to an earlier, 1988, survey of ten rubber manufacturing companies in the Netherlands designed to identify occupational hazards in the industry. That survey had shown that a significant proportion of the workers was exposed to high levels of noise, curing fumes, dusts, and cyclohexane soluble fractions of rubber chemicals or used bad postures while performing their job tasks. The followup survey, conducted in 1994, revisited nine of the original companies. The tenth company had gone out of business. Walk through surveys were performed and actual working conditions and control measures applied since the 1988 survey were discussed with company management personnel. The authors conclude that the largest improvements in controlling hazardous exposures in the Dutch rubber manufacturing industry have been in controlling dust emissions. Some success has been achieved in controlling noise exposures.
