TRENDS IN SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR AND THE INCIDENCE OF SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE AND HIV AMONG DRUG-USING PROSTITUTES, AMSTERDAM 1986-1992

A study was conducted among drug users in Amsterdam, The Netherlands to evaluate whether the threat of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and prevention measures had an influence on sexual risk behavior with clients, and the incidence of sexually transmitted disease (STD) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). High risk behaviors were evaluated in 281 current drug using prostitutes between 1 December 1985 and 31 December 1992. Subjects completed a questionnaire on drug use, sexual behavior and medical history and had blood collected for HIV testing every 4 months. The study indicated that drug using prostitutes in Amsterdam have reduced their sexual risk behavior and their STD incidence has declined. There appears to be a positive effect resulting from the effectiveness of HIV testing and the provisions of counseling, particularly for HIV positive prostitutes.
