Personal interviews were conducted with women who had or had not participated in a 6 month acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) prevention program among prostitutes in Ghana to determine whether exposure to the intervention program increased condom use, whether initial increases were maintained, and whether these changes could be attributed to the intervention. Self reported condom use increased dramatically during the 6 month program, from 6% prior to intervention to 71% 6 months later. Subjects were interviewed again 3 years after the end of the program. Almost two thirds of intervention group members reported always using condoms with clients and only one woman reported never using condoms.
