OBJECTIVE AND SUBJECTIVE WORK MONOTONY: EFFECTS ON JOB SATISFACTION, PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS, AND ABSENTEEISM IN BLUE-COLLAR WORKERS

The effect of work monotony on job satisfaction, psychological distress, and absenteeism was examined in 1,278 blue collar workers, selected from 21 manufacturing facilities in Israel. The workers completed questionnaires concerning work underload and repetitiveness, psychological distress, anxiety, irritability, depression, and health. Sickness absence records for the workers were reviewed. Sickness absence was significantly related to job monotony, and psychological distress. The authors conclude that work underload leading to work monotony is a definite source of job stress.
