A study of the impact of family and supportive work variables on work/family conflicts and strains was conducted. The study group consisted of 398 health care professionals, employed at 45 acute care facilities in Nebraska, who had children at home. The results showed that flexible scheduling and supportive supervisors have positive effects on employee perceptions of control over work and family matters. These findings suggest that organizations can take steps that will help their employees increase their control over family responsibilities and this control may help the employees better manage the conflicting demands of work and family life.
