PERCEIVED NUCLEAR RISK, ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT, AND APPRAISALS OF MANAGEMENT: A STUDY OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANT PERSONNEL

Employees of a modern Western nuclear powerplant were surveyed to determine if perceived nuclear risk was associated with employee involvement in the organization, or organizational commitment. Of the 428 employees, 27% were technical staff, 14% were office staff and 27% were blue collar workers, with 44% working in controlled sections. The 18 items on the questionnaire dealt with perceived nuclear risks, the acceptance of the organization's goals and values, willingness to exert effort on behalf of the organization, desire to stay with the organization, and appraisals of the management. The relationships between perceived nuclear risks, organizational commitment, and appraisals of the management were not influenced by the employee's age, gender or length of employment with the organization. Perceived nuclear risk correlated with acceptance of the organization's goals and values in that employees who did not accept the goals and values of the organization estimated higher risks. Perceived nuclear risk increased as trust and satisfaction with top management decreased. Risk Analysis, 15(3):391-396, 1995. (29 references)
