ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN, WORK, AND WELL BEING. MANAGING OCCUPATIONAL STRESS THROUGH CHANGES IN THE WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT

The contribution of the physical work environment to occupational stress was reviewed, and a conceptual framework relating the physical work environment to human functioning and well being was developed. The framework described had three components: identification of basic human needs relating to the work environment, identification of properties of the environment likely to affect the fulfillment of those needs, and identification of indicators of fit and misfit related to occupational stress and well being. Environmental features such as lack of control over the social environment, distractions, environmental deprivation, and inability to regulate comfort were described as features associated with stress related outcomes, consistent with the proposed conceptual framework.
