EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL ANTIMONY EXPOSURE IN STARTER BATTERY PRODUCTION

Lead battery production workers from the casting and formation areas were monitored for exposure to antimony (Sb) in the form of antimony-trioxide and stibine. Urinary Sb (SbU) levels were determined at the beginning and end of the last workday of the week, concurrent with air sampling, and after a weekend away from work. Blood samples were drawn at the end of the last shift of the week and analyzed for blood Sb (SbB). Airborne Sb (SbA) was monitored with personal samplers worn by casters and formers. Formers had higher median levels of SbA, SbB, and SbU. Elimination profiles of both groups indicated that absorbed Sb was completely excreted over the weekend. The authors conclude that the measured Sb levels were within industrial tolerance ranges, that the urinary halflives of both Sb species was about 4 days, and that significant correlations exist between SbA and both SbB and SbU.
