Occupational exposure to manganese (Mn) among garage mechanics was studied and the amount of Mn exposure due to the combustion of MMT was determined. Levels of Mn, iron, aluminum, and zinc were measured in four garages and at the workplaces of nonautomotive workers. The average Mn concentration in the workplaces of nonautomotive workers was not significantly different from environmental levels while the Mn concentration in the garages was 10 times that seen for the nonautomotive workers. In addition the concentrations of aluminum, iron, and zinc were significantly higher for the mechanics compared with nonautomotive workers and occupational exposures to these metals were significantly higher for both groups of workers compared with environmental exposure levels. Less than 10% of the Mn exposure of garage mechanics was due to combustion products of MMT.
