Estimates of exposure were derived for a cohort of about 26,000 workers for an investigation of the mortality of workers exposed to acrylonitrile. Job Exposure Profiles (a data management system) and a database containing almost 19,000 air monitoring results, were combined using a computerized interactive exposure assessment program (EAP). The EAP directly calculated job/department means of the monitoring results for each time period over which there were no significant changes that affected exposure levels in the workplace. The program provided a structured mechanism for developing historical exposure estimates and at the same time allowed the user to have access to a variety of estimation methods based on the data available.
