SCLERODERMA AND OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE

A case/referent study based on 16 years of hospital records in the province of Trento, Italy was conducted to determine whether certain occupations were at risk for scleroderma. Twenty-one cases of scleroderma or localized variants of scleroderma, such as morphea, were identified. Cases, and matched referents were interviewed and completed a structured questionnaire that included an occupational history. A statistically significant risk was found for exposure to solvents. A slightly increased odds ratio occurred for other chemicals, silica, and hand arm vibration. The authors conclude that the results confirm that there is a significant association between scleroderma and exposure to organic solvents.
