The relationship between measures of individual sun exposure and risk of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) was examined in 69 patients with BCC on the head and neck, 82 with BCC on the trunk, 41 with BCC on the limbs, and 700 persons without BCC. The risk of BCC of the head and neck and limbs decreased with increasing lifetime sun exposure. The risk of BCC of the trunk increased with increasing lifetime sun exposure. The risk of BCC increased with increasing hours of bright sunshine exposure. The risk of BCC increased significantly among heavily exposed subjects who tanned well but not in those who tanned poorly. The risk of BCC increased with increased lifetime sun exposure on nonworking days, both year round and in the warmer months. The authors conclude that, although sun exposure is associated with an increased risk of BCC, the risk does not increase beyond a certain level of sun exposure.
