RESPIRATORY EFFECTS OF CHRONIC HYDROGEN SULFIDE EXPOSURE

Lung function was assessed in a study of 107 sewer workers exposed to hydrogen-sulfide (H2S), with 116 water treatment workers as controls. Lower lung functions were seen in sewer workers than in water treatment workers of the same age and smoking strata, with the most significant differences observed in the oldest age groups. Decreasing lung function with increasing years of employment was observed for sewer workers with medium to high H2S exposure. The authors conclude that long term sewer workers with high exposures to H2S experienced a significant decline in lung function.
