INCIDENCE OF CANCER AMONG PERSONS LIVING NEAR A MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE LANDFILL SITE IN MONTREAL, QUEBEC

Cancer incidence rates in persons living near the site of the Miron Quarry municipal solid waste landfill in Montreal, Quebec, Canada were examined. Low, medium and high air pollution exposure zones around the site were formed by grouping postal code areas. Significant or nearly significant positive associations were observed for stomach cancer and cervix cancer in women, and stomach cancer, liver cancer, prostate cancer, and cancer of the intrahepatic bile ducts, trachea, bronchus and lung in men. Breast cancer rates in women were significantly less than expected in women in the high exposure zone. Most of the excess stomach cancer risk was restricted to a high exposure subzone downwind of the site. For men, most of the excess risk for liver and bile duct cancer was also restricted to the downwind high exposure subzone. The authors conclude that additional studies are warranted.
