UPPER AIRWAY SYMPTOMS AND FUNCTION IN WOOD SURFACE COATING INDUSTRY WORKERS

Potential health effects to the upper airways and eyes of workers involved in ultraviolet (UV) radiation or acid curing (AC) of surface coatings for wood were investigated. The greatest frequency of upper airway and ocular symptoms of discomfort occurred in UV line workers and finishers of UV surface coated wood products. Significantly slower mucociliary clearance and higher olfaction thresholds were seen in UV and/or AC workers. Dust levels were similar in both the UV and AC work places and were attributed to the observed symptoms among the workers. In spite of large improvements in the AC and UV surface coatings, the authors conclude that additional control measures are needed for the elimination of airborne contaminants and improvement of work practices.
